An old friend has returned to Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula. Radio station 3MP disappeared for a little while but it’s back, combining a fresh new sound with elements of its rich and colourful broadcasting history.
For a few years, the 1377 frequency was used for other stations and formats. However 3MP’s past listeners are celebrating its return to music 24 hours a day, heard not only on 1377 AM but also with the stereo digital quality of DAB+.
3MP began life in 1976 from studios in Frankston’s Bayside Shopping Centre to serve Melbourne, but with a particular emphasis on the Mornington Peninsula. ‘Bay City Radio’ was a hit across the city but most especially in the bayside suburbs and right around to Portsea.
Back then, FM was still to come and 3MP brought new life to Melbourne radio when it burst onto the airwaves with announcers including Dean Matters, Brian Bury and ‘Baby John’ Burgess playing hits like ABBA’s Dancing Queen and Sherbet’s Howzat, and challenging the top-rating 3XY. Then by the mid-80s, when new FM stations were changing the listening habits of Melbourne radio listeners, 3MP switched to ‘easy music’ which proved popular for the next 20 years.
3MP’s present day playlist is full of hits from the Bang a Gong era – artists like Carole King, Elton John, Elvis, Roberta Flack, Stevie Wonder, The Carpenters, The 5th Dimension and so many more.
Today’s reborn 3MP, under new owners ACE Radio, combines a return to ‘Easy Music’ with a focus on the Mornington Peninsula. In between hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s is news, traffic, weather and Peninsula news* and information.
3MP has put-together a fresh line-up of experienced radio presenters. Jon Vertigan and Julie Strini start the weekday line-up with 3MP’s Easy Breakfast. Emily Canning and Cathy Jubb continue through 3MP’s daytime, with Emma Clark at night and Grant Johnstone on weekends.
Listeners across Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula and Westernport areas can hear 3MP on 1377 AM and DAB+. However anyone, anywhere can hear the easy music at 3MP.com.au, and via iHeartRadio and RadioApp. 3MP is also on Facebook.
