Puppet on a String peaked at no 2 on the Go-Set National Top 40 on 28 June 1967.
‘Puppet on a String’ was recorded by British singer Sandie Shaw and written by Bill Martin and Phil Coulter. It is best known as the British winning entry at the Eurovision Song Contest 1967, held in Vienna.
Despite the song’s success, Sandie despised the recording. She later said she hated it “from the very first oompah to the final bang on the bass drum. I was repelled by its sexist drivel.”
