Sonny Bono, a songwriter and record producer for Phil Spector, wrote the lyrics and composed the song’s music for himself and his then-wife Cher late at night in their basement. When Cher was woken up to sing the lyrics, she hated the song and didn’t think it would soon be a hit and immediately went back to bed. But she came to like it after Sonny tweaked it.

This isn’t an anti-war song, but it went over well with the hippie crowd because it stuck up for guys with long hair when Cher sang, “Let them say your hair’s too long, I don’t care, with you I can’t go wrong.”
