Lady Montego was written by Duncan McGuire when he was with Leo de Castro and Friends in 1973. It was first recorded by that band. Later the same year, McGuire left Friends with two other band members, Ray Burton and Mark Kennedy, left to join Ayers Rock.
In 1974, Ayers Rock recorded their debut album, Big Red Rock, and included a new version of McGuire’s song Lady Montego, this time with a jazz-rock feel.
