The Man from Nazareth: JOHN PAUL JOANS

Australian singles chart:
The Man from Nazareth entered the Kent charts on 8 February 1971 and peaked at #29.

Songwriters:
Kevin Godley, John Davidge, Eric Stewart, Lol Creme

‘John Paul Joans’ was the stage name of UK comedian, singer and songwriter John Davidge, aka Reg Gray and JP Jones. He took the name ‘John Paul Joans’ as a cheeky reference to the Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones.

The Man from Nazareth reached #25 in the UK and #29 in Australia. Davidge co-wrote the song with Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme. A year later, Stewart, Godley and Creme formed 10cc with Graham Gouldman.

Davidge’s lyrics and stand-up comedy act often dealt with subjects that were politically motivated or considered a little controversial for the time.
