Don McLean was a protégé of Pete Seeger, having played with him in the 1960s.
McLean’s second studio album American Pie contains the chart-topping singles American Pie and Vincent.
The album reached #1 on America’s Billboard 200 and, at the Australian 1972 King of Pop Awards, won ‘Most Popular Overseas LP’. It was released to much acclaim, later being included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
