History of Australian Music 1960 until 2000:
The Cherokees were formed in 1961 by Johnny Chester to back Melbourne vocalists at local dances. The name was not derived from the Cherokee Indian Tribe but from an ice-cream that was popular at the time.
By 1965 they had adopted a new sound and image and signed to the Go!! label.
