Axiom was formed in Melbourne in 1969 by Brian Cadd and Don Mudie, both former members of leading Melbourne popsters The Groop. Cadd, who began his career with Melbourne’s The Jackson Kings, was already a prominent singer, songwriter and keyboard player. Mudie and Cadd formed a successful songwriting partnership that carried on through Axiom and beyond. Glenn Shorrock was the former lead singer of The Twilights; Doug Lavery was from Perth’s (in)famous The Valentines; Chris Stockley was from Melbourne group Cam-Pact.

Though the title Arkansas Grass superficially appealed to international markets, and its Civil War theme reflected Brian Cadd’s current obsession with the music of The Band, it was in fact a coded anti-Vietnam war song – and in that respect addressing a very Australian concern, since Australian men were at the time being drafted to fight in that war.
