From 2SM in the ’70s to 2UE today, Trevor Sinclair says “I’m still doing what I love” as he celebrates 47 years in radio.
While many announcers Trevor worked with in the early days are now long gone from the industry, Trevor is one of the survivors.
“I feel very privileged,” Trevor told Radio Today.
“I’ve seen so many people come and go in this business. Some people have burnt out, others have just got tired of radio and moved onto other things or been moved out by management and have just given up.”
“I say I feel privileged because every time I pick up the studio phone or read a text message from a listener, I’m reminded of the fact that they choose to listen to me, and many of them have for 40 years or more.”
Growing up in Sydney’s inner west, young Trevor was right into music and theatre. Some work with the Australian Theatre for Young People led to some introductions to radio and television people. By 1976 Trevor was in radio school, then some jobs at country NSW stations.
1978 saw him gain gigs in Canberra then Sydney’s powerhouse station (at the time), More Music 2SM. A few AM and FM stations later (including 2UW, Mix 106.5 and 2CH), Trevor is now waking Sydney up each day at 2UE.
Many followers of Bang a Gong enjoy 2UE’s music mix, with artists ranging from Elvis and the Beatles, through the ’60s, ’70s and into the ’80s, with the likes of Elton John and many top Aussie acts. A large number of 2UE’s songs are not heard on any other commercial station in Sydney.
