By the time of Chain’s album Toward the Blues, Matt Taylor had moved from Brisbane to Melbourne and soon became their frontman. At this point, Chain were Phill Manning, Matt Taylor, Barry Harvey (Little Goose) and Barry Sullivan (Big Goose), referred to by fans as the classic line-up.
Black and Blue was released by this line-up as a single in March 1971, followed in July by their second single, Judgement. It was followed in September by their first studio album Toward the Blues.
