Wikipedia:
Longtime friends and admirers of one another, Parton, Harris, and Ronstadt first attempted to record an album together in the mid-1970s, but scheduling conflicts and other difficulties (including the fact that the three women all recorded for different record labels) prevented its release. A collaboration effort finally came to fruition in 1987, being produced by George Massenburg.
A dozen years after the release of Trio, the country music supergroup returned with another in the same vein. The songs were recorded in 1994 by Parton, Harris and Ronstadt, but label disputes and conflicting schedules prevented their release at the time. However in 1998, after Parton and Harris had parted ways with their respective labels, they could finally release their second album together.
After the Gold Rush on Trio II was written and first performed by Neil Young on his 1970 album of the same name. Dolly Parton stated that Young himself does not know what the song is about: “I loved the song on Neil Young’s [1970] album and I loved it when Prelude had it out in 1974. But I didn’t know what the song meant. Linda and Emmy knew Neil, so we called him and asked him. He said, ‘I have no idea.’ I thought that was so funny. I think it’s about the Second Coming or the invasion of aliens, or both.”
