Wikipedia:
Bridge over Troubled Water was composed by Paul Simon very quickly, so much so that he asked himself: “Where did that come from? It doesn’t seem like me.” The title concept was inspired by Claude Jeter’s line “I’ll be your bridge over deep water if you trust in my name” which Jeter sang with his group the Swan Silvertones in the 1958 song Mary Don’t You Weep.

Songfacts:
Art Garfunkel sang this alone, although he thought Paul Simon should have sung it. Says Simon, “Many times I’m sorry I didn’t do it.”
Paul Simon often sang it at his solo shows. At the last concert of his 2018 farewell tour, he introduced it by saying, “I’m going to reclaim my lost child.”

Lyrics:
When you′re weary, feeling small
When tears are in your eyes, I will dry them all

When times get rough
And friends just can′t be found
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
