Wikipedia:
A Flock of Seagulls is an English new wave band formed in Liverpool in 1979. The group, whose best-known line-up comprised Mike Score, Ali Score, Frank Maudsley and Paul Reynolds, hit the peak of their chart success in the early 1980s.
Australia is the only country where I Ran reached #1. At home in the UK, the song peaked much lower at #43. In New Zealand it made #7, Canada #26, and the US #9.
In an article for Rolling Stone titled, Anglomania: The Second British Invasion, Parke Puterbaugh wrote of the impact of the song’s music video on its US chart success: “Fronted by a singer-synth player with a haircut stranger than anything you’d be likely to encounter in a month of poodle shows, A Flock of Seagulls struck gold on the first try.”
