The Vandenbergs (Netherlands) and Youngs (Scotland) migrated to Australia in 1963; both families were initially housed at the Villawood Migrant Hostel in Sydney.
Harry Vanda (Johannes Vandenberg) and George Young came together as members of Australia’s most successful 1960s rock band The Easybeats, writing their #1 hit Friday on My Mind.
While in the UK between 1970 and 1973, Vanda and Young continued writing and performing under various names, including the Marcus Hook Roll Band. As Vanda and Young they had a hit in 1971 with Lazy River.
Upon returning to Australia in 1973, they were staff producers for Albert Productions, writing and producing a string of hits for other artists such as John Paul Young, William Shakespeare, Ted Mulry, former Easybeats bandmate Stevie Wright and others. They produced early albums for AC/DC, of which George Young’s brothers Malcolm and Angus (and later, nephew Stevie) were members.
From 1977 Vanda and Young recorded together under the pseudonym Flash and the Pan, releasing singles such as Hey, St Peter and Down Among the Dead Men.
George died in 2017.

Marcus Hook Roll Band was formed in London in 1972 by Harry Vanda and George Young as a session band to record their songwriting efforts. There was a London version of the group, then one in Sydney, formed in 1973 when Vanda and Young returned to Australia. The album Tales of Old Grand-Daddy was recorded in 1974, noted for featuring Malcolm and Angus Young prior to forming AC/DC. It entered the Australian albums chart* on 24 February 1975 and peaked at #89.
