BONUS SONG BELOW – Death to Disco by Dave and the Derros
‘Dave the Derro’ was a character of radio announcer David Jones who wrote parody and novelty songs for his popular breakfast show on 2NX Newcastle, utilising his many character voices. However, it was during his time at 3XY Melbourne that Dave recorded his biggest hit, Nice Legs, Shame About the Face, a cover of a 1979 song by British pop punk/new wave band The Monks.
Dave’s version was produced and recorded by 3XY’s talented production manager Nigel Haines at their Spencer Street studios, with Nigel playing guitar.
In 2009, Cameron Adams of Melbourne’s Herald Sun newspaper described the record as a “Pub rock novelty hit that was really all about the title” when he ranked it as one of the 15 worst Australian songs of all time.
Jones called his backing band The Derros, made up of various musicians at different times.
Five singles were released by Dave and the Derros on Mushroom, four of them making the Australian Top 100 singles chart. A live album, Live After Death, was released in 1980.
Lyrics:
I met her on a Friday, helping out an old mate
Waiting at the corner, she was dressed in black
There was I expecting a really tasty bird
He said she was good looking, why should I doubt his word
