Puppet on a String, recorded by the English singer Sandie Shaw, represented the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1967, held in Vienna. Sandie won the contest with the song, becoming the first of the United Kingdom’s five Eurovision wins.

The BBC selected Sandie as their representative for the 12th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest but she wasn’t keen to participate and had to be talked into it.
Shaw performed five prospective songs on BBC television, including Puppet on a String, with the public to vote for their favourite.
Puppet on a String was Sandie’s least favourite of the five. In her own words, “I hated it from the very first ‘oompah’ to the final ‘bang’ on the big bass drum. I was instinctively repelled by its sexist drivel and cuckoo-clock tune”.
