In a song review, critic Richie Unterberger called the Rolling Stones version “the most famous rock version of the song … one of the best songs on the Rolling Stones’ debut album, and one of their most popular in-concert numbers on their early tours”. The group learned the song from a version that Chuck Berry recorded for his 1961 album New Juke Box Hits, although Unterberger also notes that a version by Perry Como on his 1959 RCA Victor album Como Swings, was a source for the lyrics.

The popular rhythm and blues song (Get Your Kicks on) Route 66 has been covered dozens of times in all music styles. It was popularised by The King Cole Trio in the 1940s then Chuck Berry recorded it in 1961. His version got the attention of The Rolling Stones, who covered it in 1964 and made it a regular part of their stage show.
