After Zoot broke up in 1971, Springfield signed with Sparmac Records and issued his debut solo single, Speak to the Sky. Sparmac label owner, Robie Porter, was also producer and manager for Springfield. His debut album, Beginnings, was recorded in London. As well as Speak to the Sky, other singles from the album were Hooky Jo and What Would the Children Think.
Springfield moved to the United States in 1972.
