The first US release was by Bette Midler, in February 1977. Carole Bayer Sager’s version spent four weeks at #1 in Australia and reached #6 in the UK. Midler’s only reached #75 in Australia.
Although Sager is a prolific songwriter who is credited on many hit singles, this was the first one that she performed herself.
