’70s and ’80s hitmaker, and now Aussie resident, Leo Sayer is back in the UK for a final tour which begins on Wednesday.

Ahead of that he is doing a round of media interviews, including one with BBC Breakfast in which he disclosed that his favourite Leo Sayer song is You Make Me Feel Like Dancing.

He also told a story about receiving a phone call from Elvis Presley while in Memphis in August 1977. As it turned out, this was the day before Elvis died. Remarkably, he had a similar story about John Lennon.

Leo has lived in Australia for more than 20 years, a move he told his BBC audience has been “fantastic”, saying he remains busy here with his music career. At 78, Leo still has a spring in his step, with the voice and vitality of someone much younger. In the interview he said that despite all the negativity in the world right now, “everything in life can be positive”.

Leo Sayer has decided to retire from touring, although he still enjoys performing for fans in Australia.

Before moving here, he felt that British record labels and media were overly focused on manufactured pop and reality TV talent show contestants rather than established artists. Seeking a vibrant atmosphere and a lifestyle change, he chose Australia as his permanent home.

So Leo moved from the UK to Australia in 2005, settling initially in Sydney. He said Australia had retained a deep respect and loyalty for musical heroes from the 1970s, where he still enjoys a massive fan base.

Leo officially became an Australian citizen during an Australia Day ceremony in Canberra on 26 January 2009, receiving his citizenship from then-Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. He now lives in Berrima in the NSW Southern Highlands with his wife, Donatella Piccinetti. He remains active in music and in his local community because, despite putting the brakes on touring, he sure doesn’t look like someone who is ready to retire just yet.
