I’m Not in Love by British group 10cc was written by band members Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman. It is known for its innovative and distinctive backing track, composed mostly of the band’s multi-tracked vocals.
Eric wrote it as a riposte to his wife’s declaration that he did not tell her often enough that he loved her. I’m Not in Love was originally conceived as a bossa nova song played on guitars, but two other members of the band, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, disliked the track and it was abandoned. However, after hearing members of their staff continue to sing the melody around their studio, Eric persuaded the group to give the song another chance, to which Kevin replied that for the song to work it needed to be radically changed, and suggested that the band should try to create a new version using just voices.

Backing vocals:
Eric Stewart spent three weeks recording Graham Gouldman, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme singing “ahhh” 16 times for each note of the chromatic scale, building up a “choir” of 48 voices for each note of the scale. They used tape loops to keep the vocal notes going for long lengths of time. Eric sang lead vocals.
There is also the story of a staff member at the recording studio who came in during the session to quietly tell Eric that he had a phone call. They thought that Kathy Redfern’s voice was just what they needed, and she appeared on the recording, whispering “be quiet, big boys don’t cry”.
