In 1968, Lionel Rose MBE won the world bantamweight boxing title from Japanese fighter Masahiko ‘Fighting’ Harada in Tokyo. He became the first Indigenous Australian to win a world title and to be named Australian of the Year.
During time off from boxing in the early 1970s, Rose embarked on a short, modest singing career, having hits with I Thank You and Please Remember Me, produced and written by Johnny Young.
Lionel retired from professional boxing in 1975, having compiled a record of 42 wins and 11 losses, with 12 wins by knockout.
