Wikipedia:
Edward Bear was a Toronto-based Canadian pop-rock group, best known for Last Song and Close Your Eyes. Both songs made the Top 100 in Australia, reaching #2 and #73 respectively. Last Song was also their biggest hit in Canada, making #1.
In an interview published on the website for the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, Last Song composer Larry Evoy states that the song was inspired by his own personal experience. “It was written over a period of time and was literal. I would actually go to sleep with my light on, hoping that she’d think I was still awake and would drop by, and she did.”

Lyrics:
Did you know I’d go to sleep and leave the lights on?
Hopin’ you’d come by and know that I was home, still awake
But two years go by and still my light’s on
This is hard for me to say, but this is all that I can take
