Mike Vernon, producer for Fleetwood Mac, Eric Clapton and David Bowie, died this month at age 81.

Mike Vernon is a highly influential English music producer, best known for shaping the sound of the British blues boom in the 1960s. He developed a deep passion for American blues at a young age, which led him to champion and record artists in that style at a time when it was still relatively niche in the UK.
Vernon worked closely with key acts such as John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, producing their landmark 1966 album Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton, which helped launch Eric Clapton as a major figure in rock music. He also produced early recordings by Fleetwood Mac during their original blues-based phase with Peter Green.
In 1968, Vernon founded the influential label Blue Horizon, dedicated largely to blues artists, including both British performers and American legends like Otis Spann. His work helped bridge the gap between traditional American blues and its British revival.
In fact, Vernon had connections with a surprisingly wide range of artists across different styles.
He worked with David Bowie early in Bowie’s career, producing sessions in the late 1960s when Bowie was still experimenting with his sound. Vernon also produced material for Manfred Mann, a group that successfully blended pop, R&B, and jazz influences.
Another notable collaboration was with Chicken Shack, featuring Christine McVie before she joined Fleetwood Mac. Vernon helped shape their bluesy, piano-driven sound. He was also involved with Climax Blues Band, guiding their transition from pure blues into a more radio-friendly style.
In the 1970s, Vernon expanded further, working with artists like Rory Gallagher, whose fiery blues-rock approach suited Vernon’s production strengths. He also produced recordings for Focus, showing his willingness to step into progressive rock territory.
Later in his career, Vernon continued producing across a range of genres and artists, maintaining a reputation for authenticity and strong musical instincts. His contribution to blues and rock music has been widely recognised, making him a key behind-the-scenes figure in the development of modern popular music.
Mike Vernon passed away on 2 March 2026 at the age of 81. In a poignant statement, his family said:
“To the world, he was a passionate champion of the blues and a legendary record producer who helped shape so much incredible music. But to us, he was also our dad, a brother, an uncle, a grandpa and partner — our steady guide, our storyteller, and our biggest supporter.”
