ABC pop and rock music television shows Hit Scene and GTK (Get to Know), along with programs on the commercial channels, gave us a glimpse of our favourite Australian artists in the late ’60s and early ’70s.
Zoot and The Masters Apprentices brought a lot of excitement to the local music scene as they, and other emerging rock bands, brought a dynamic edge to Australian music.
Here are a few clips from Hit Scene and GTK featuring those two bands, with Zoot after they shook off their pink phase. In fact, their song Hey Pinky was them openly mocking the pink outfits, as well as their previous management and their detractors. They promoted the single with an ad in Go-Set that featured a picture of their nude buttocks.
As for Zoot’s highly-acclaimed version of Eleanor Rigby, there was no official reaction from The Beatles, although a story emerged suggesting that John Lennon heard Zoot’s version and was very positive about it. According to Rick Springfield, their cover was partly inspired by Jimi Hendrix’s approach to making existing songs his own.
