Songfacts – Delta Dawn:
A version of Delta Dawn by Bette Midler was scheduled for release, but Capitol Records beat Midler (and Atlantic Records) by releasing Reddy’s single two days before Midler’s release date. This prompted the bigwigs of Atlantic to flip the record and push the former B-side, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy instead. At the last minute, Delta Dawn was dropped from Midler’s 45 and replaced by Superstar, which became a hit for the Carpenters and Australia’s Colleen Hewett.

Born in Melbourne into a showbiz family, Helen began performing in the 1960s. She won a talent quest on pop music TV show Bandstand, the prize being an opportunity to record in New York. Helen went there in 1966 and remained in the US to pursue a singing career.
