Derek Pellicci’s creativity is running hot in 2026. The legendary founding drummer of the globally acclaimed Little River Band has just released his third solo album this year, Il Profeta (“The Prophet”).
The heart of the album lies in its powerful storytelling. The standout lead single, One in a Million, is a punchy anthem celebrating individuality, challenging the status quo, and marching to the beat of your own drum. Derek carries the theme further on Facebook: “Form your own opinions. Fly solo. Keep your wings unclipped.”
Meanwhile, the evocative track That’s Where the Story Stands dives deep into the bittersweet nature of memories and the defining crossroad moments of life. In fact, this collection of 15 original songs puts a strong emphasis on Derek’s songwriting and getting his own ideas out there.
What makes Il Profeta truly special is that it is a proud family affair. Pellicci teamed up with his son, Joel Pellicci, who serves as a vital creative partner for the project. Joel helped shape the album’s musical direction, curated the tracklist, came up with the title, and designed the striking cover art.
Joel also developed the concept for the music video for The Universe Conceives. The direction and editing is Joel’s work, creating a visual interpretation of Derek’s music and its cosmic and philosophical themes.
Il Profeta comes hot on the heels of Derek’s earlier 2026 releases, Welcome to the Human Race and Country and Eastern. This new burst of creativity nicely bookends his early years in bands like Mississippi and LRB. Having established his music credentials in the early ’70s, Derek quickly became highly regarded for his talent as a musician and songwriter.
The use of AI in his recent work serves to enhance his talent and creativity, not supersede it. “I have found in AI, a method which allows me to make music of the highest calibre, equalling the standard I made with Little River Band,” says Derek.
