Wikipedia:
Handbags and Gladrags was written in 1967 by Mike d’Abo, who was then the lead singer of Manfred Mann. The first released version of the song was by Chris Farlowe in 1967, followed by others including Rod Stewart in 1969 for his album An Old Raincoat Won’t Ever Let You Down. This version was arranged by Mike d’Abo, who also played piano.
In 1973, Australian singer-songwriter-musician Jon English released his version as his debut single, from his debut studio album Wine Dark Sea. English had left Sebastian Hardie by this time, having won the role of Judas Iscariot in the Australian version of Jesus Christ Superstar.
Rod Stewart’s and Jon English’s versions were the only two to chart in Australia.

Ever seen a blind man cross the road
Trying to make the other side?
Ever seen a young girl growing old
Trying to make herself a bride?
