The song’s life began in 1962 when Burt Bacharach and lyricist Hal David were songwriters at the New York songwriting factory the Brill Building.
The most commercially successful recording was by UK singer Dusty Springfield, which charted in Australia in August 1964. A version by Dionne Warwick also charted in Australia in November 1966.
US-born Australian singer Marcia Hines recorded a version in 1976 and released it as the lead single from her second studio album, Shining.
Marcia was voted Australia’s Queen of Pop for three consecutive years from 1976.
