Wikipedia:
The Nips Are Getting Bigger is the debut single by Mental As Anything, released in July 1979. It was the first single from the album Get Wet, written by lead vocalist Martin Plaza. It’s a cautionary tale about drinking. As the night goes on, the drinks get stronger and “the nips (of alcohol) are getting bigger”.
Mental as Anything was the first band signed to a new record label, Regular, in 1978. The second act signed was Flowers, who later changed their name to Icehouse, with other artists to follow.

Started out, just drinkin′ beer

Just a couple more, made me feel a little better
Believe me when I tell you, it was nothin’ to do with the letter
