Wikipedia – The Wizard:
Having launched his career in 1964 using the stage name Toby Tyler, Mark Feld changed his name again in 1965 to Marc Bolan, at which time the 18 year old signed with Decca Records.
He recorded his debut single The Wizard with the Ladybirds on backing vocals (later finding fame with Benny Hill), and studio session musicians playing all the instruments, Jimmy Page and Big Jim Sullivan among them. The Wizard, Marc’s own composition, was released on 19 November 1965.

Lyrics The Wizard:
Walking in the woods one day
I met a man who said he was magic
Wonderful things he said
Pointed hat upon his head
Knew why people laughed and cried
Why they lived and why they died

Wikipedia – early recordings prior to The Wizard:
In 1964, Mark Feld was attempting to establish a music career as Toby Tyler. At this time he liked to appear wearing a corduroy peaked cap similar to his then-current source of inspiration, Bob Dylan. His then-manager, Allan Warren, hired a recording studio and had Bolan’s first acetates cut. He sang the Bob Dylan song Blowin’ in the Wind and Dion’s The Road I’m On (Gloria).
The tapes from the Toby Tyler recording session vanished for more than 25 years before resurfacing in 1991 and selling for nearly US$8,000. They were eventually released on CD in 1993.
