Dedicated To The One I Love was written by Lowman Pauling and Ralph Bass and was originally a US hit for their band, The 5 Royales, in 1957, and again on re-release in 1961. The song was also a hit for The Shirelles in 1961.
The most commercially successful version of the song came in 1967 by The Mamas and The Papas, with Michelle Phillips on lead vocals. It was the first time that Phillips was given the lead over ‘Mama’ Cass Elliot. The song was also included on the group’s 1967 album The Mamas & The Papas Deliver.
Cash Box called the single a “groovey, harmonic, soft rock venture that is sure to please all of the group’s many fans.”
