Kenny Ball was an English jazz musician, best known as the bandleader, lead trumpet player and vocalist in Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen. This Dixieland band was at the forefront of the early 1960s UK jazz revival.
Their first record in both the UK and Australia was their version of Cole Porter’s Samantha, in 1961. A couple more singles followed before Kenny’s biggest hit, Midnight in Moscow, which reached #1 in Australia and #2 in the UK and USA. Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen made ten appearances on Australian singles charts between 1961 and 1964.
Written in 1955 by composer Vasily Solovyov-Sedoi and poet Mikhail Matusovsky, Leningrad Nights had an early name change to Moscow Nights.
In 1961, the Dutch jazz group New Orleans Syncopators recorded it as Midnight in Moscow, arranged by its leader Jan Burgers. It was this instrumental arrangement that got the attention of Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen in the UK.
This led to versions by other artists, instrumental and vocal, over subsequent years.
