Jennifer says:
When I was a kid growing up in the 60s and 70s, 2SM was THE radio station that played the best music – at least in my opinion. Music has always been a very big part of my life and I can’t overstate the importance of our Australian music, although I also have some international artists on my list.
Security – Thane Russal and Three
From the opening riff to the end, it’s upbeat and something to dance to.
Sorry – The Easybeats
So many excellent songs by this one band alone and I’m proud to call them Australian!
He’s Gonna Step on You Again – John Kongos
Another great dance track that can be played on repeat.
Paint it Black – The Rolling Stones
As relevant today for its concept as it was back in 1966. Brian Jones was also at his finest on the sitar. My favourite Stones track of all time.
Jamaica Rum – TMG
A groovy song that’s good for kicking back and relaxing.
Golden Miles – Healing Force
The older I get, the more appreciative I am of the musical quality, vocal style and the emotional pull I get from listening to it.
Gypsy Queen – Country Radio
Country meets folk in this amazing Aussie track.
Seasons of Change – Blackfeather
One of those songs I sing from start to finish. I simply love it for the music and heart wrenching vocals.
Baby Blue – Badfinger
It’s an absolute tragedy and travesty what this band went through. Despite this, they were an amazing band and this song has stood the test of time.
Read about the tragedy to which Jennifer refers HERE.
Old Man Emu – John Williamson
A great ditty about a bird who can’t fly but can run very fast. I still get a chuckle when I listen to it now.
Black Night – Deep Purple
One of their very first songs I heard and I have been a fan ever since, especially of Mark II with Gillan and Glover. Classic.
Woman You’re Breaking Me – The Groop
I never knew who sang it until recently, let alone realised that it was Brian Cadd and ultimately another great Aussie track.
I’ll Be Gone – Spectrum
I’m a sucker for good harmonica playing and this song is simply another Aussie classic.
Living in a Child’s Dream – Masters Apprentice
My favourite of theirs, describing how childhood should be enjoyed. The music and vocals are superb.
God Only Knows – The Beach Boys
This song always got in my head. Love it.
Waterloo Sunset – The Kinks
Another band with so many great songs. This one has been a long-time favourite.
Jailbreak – AC/DC
I had the good fortune of watching them perform live at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney when Bon Scott was still alive. This one’s a standout.
Let Go – Brian Cadd
Brilliant song by a brilliant musician and is still relevant today regarding relationship issues.
I Remember When I Was Young – Matt Taylor
Discovering the black man’s blues is always a mind-blowing moment and beautifully played.
Spicks and Specks – The Bee Gees.
Another timeless classic.
Living in the 70s – Skyhooks
A quirky rendition of life in the suburbs by an exceptional Aussie band.
Blackberry Way – The Move
For all its sadness and melancholy, there was always something about Roy Wood’s vocals and melody which drew me in. Another childhood favourite.
Over the Rainbow – Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs
I heard this version long before watching The Wizard of Oz. The dreams that we dare to dream really can come true.
Radar Love – Golden Earring
My major bugbear about this song was how the radio station cut out the riff in the middle for the sake of three minute air time. That riff makes the song and it deserves to be played in full!
Turn the Page – Jon English
Another cover I heard before hearing the original. No disrespect at all to Bob Seger, as he wrote a brilliant song for this fine Aussie singer to cover.
Kings of the World – Mississippi
I loved it back then and I love it now. It might partially be because I had a crush on Beeb Birtles 😊
Go Now! – The Moody Blues
Simply one of their best!
Someday, One Day – The Seekers
Beautiful melody and vocals by one of our finest folk groups.
White Rabbit – Jefferson Airplane
I never tire of this song. Just brilliant!
On the Road Again – Canned Heat
Another great track with some excellent harmonica playing.
